I Had to Teach Myself How to Sing Again

Finally! A song programme for getting your voice back.
Are you "of a sure age" and have yous wondered,
"Is information technology likewise tardily for me to get my singing voice dorsum?"
Did you "used to sing" and want to become your voice dorsum?
Do you want to learn how to sing, perhaps for the beginning time in your life?
Have you put your kids, and maybe grandkids, through music lessons (which they may or may not have appreciated) and now you're ready to follow your own dreams and work on your vocalization, like you've always wanted to?
Maybe yous don't sing. Maybe you speak a lot, for work or for other applications, and are worried virtually keeping your vox as yous abound older?
Practice you speak frequently, rather than sing – for piece of work, as a keynote, as a teacher, a salesperson, a preacher, a trainer, or other role, or perhaps you're only very expressive – and find your voice increasingly fading?
Do you lot have to speak a lot in a very noisy environment and you find yourself needing to yell frequently to be heard?
Does your throat injure the longer yous speak?
Has your speaking becoming more than painful over time?
Do people frequently ask you, "What did yous say?" and tell you they can hardly hear you?
How would it experience…
- to go your phonation back?
- to make it better than e'er?
- to sing into and throughout the mature years of your life – these years when y'all know you accept the near life, love, and experience to give and express through song?
- to protect, nurture, and fifty-fifty grow your speaking voice, so that it works for you rather than against y'all?
- to realize those vocal goals and aspirations y'all've had for years, but which have been on the back burner?
- AND to know exactly how to reach all of those goals, dreams, and aspirations :
- to identify the song areas on which you demand to focus?
- to have a plan for improving your voice that you know how to follow?
- to know what you demand to do on a daily ground that volition aid you regain the force, suppleness, health, and expression of your vocalisation?
How would that feel?

From: Natalie Eastman, Owner of A Higher Note LLC Voice Studio
To: You lot, IF you are over the historic period of forty and want to develop your singing voice so you tin "Sing Once more!", sing with abandon, and/or sing with the level of cocky-respect and proficiency you've always wanted.
To: You, IF you are over the age of 40 and want to protect, nurture, and grow your speaking voice, so that you remain solidly vocal, able to speak/railroad train/preach/communicate for long periods of fourth dimension, confident that your voice will be at that place for you.
Have you been feeling…
- Embarrassed to sing out in your worship setting? at domicile? around the campfire? or even in your car if others are around?
- Perplexed because your speaking voice is getting weaker by the year and you experience you have to actually button air to get whatever volume?
- Frustrated with the loss of your former singing range, just can't seem to gain back that lost ground?
- Self-conscious because the concluding time you gave a oral communication, your vocalization gave out completely?
- Saddened because you used to sing regularly and joyfully, and perchance even performed professionally or semi-professionally, merely fourth dimension and life circumstances have stolen those opportunities, so your voice has felt like it's decaying? Maybe your vocalisation sounds hoarse a lot; perhaps you've developed a warble; or you've experienced a loss of power or jiff control?
- Impeded because your life'due south experiences and adventures take fatigued y'all toward expressing yourself through writing songs or poems y'all feel should be songs – or perhaps speaking opportunities you're burning to jump into through which you can share your life wisdom or a profound skill you have that would help others – merely you lot feel your vox is not up to par or would requite out on you?
- Afraid, because you heard your crumbling mom or dad'southward speaking voice fade over time after they entered their golden years until it was whisper-similar, and y'all worry that it could happen to your vox, too.
- Or it could be that you've merely given up because you think, "This ship has sailed."
You believe you're too quondam, too decorated, too weak, too tardily to the game, your family unit takes too much time and energy, or your vocalization was never gilt to begin with.
Only (for the singers among us), yous all the same miss singing and dream of singing more and improve.
And (for the speakers in the room) yous still long to cultivate a powerful, healthy speaking voice.
If and then, I understand.
I sang professionally for ten years throughout my twenties and several years into my thirties. Prior to that, I besides sang all. the. time. My folks sang around the house all the fourth dimension: Mom used to sing on the radio before she married and still sang around the house, education us ditties and oldies all the fourth dimension. Dad loved to harmonize with simply about annihilation, peculiarly the "amens" in church. And he loved to sing the bass line of barbershop numbers. Happily, our public school classes sang frequently. From early on childhood, my parents put my brother and me into church choir and we spent our days, weeks, months, and years singing in children'southward choirs, youth choirs, and briefly our church'southward adult choir, earlier nosotros both moved away from dwelling afterward college. Past that fourth dimension, I was making my mode in dinner theater and light opera in D.C.
Over the years, opportunities and challenges arose from time to fourth dimension that forced me to choose between farther study and my beloved vocal performance and other life experiences. Oh, I ever sang, definitely, just didn't develop my craft as intensely or faithfully. Long story brusk, I would lose ground when I'd go several months, or sometimes a year or 2, without the functioning opportunities that used to keep me going and the regimens I'd good formerly. And when I started and completed a masters and then a doctorate (unrelated to music) in my thirties then a family unit in my forties (aye, I had the first of our iii children at the age of 40!), well, studies and parenting took precedence. Oh, I connected to sing in worship, lead worship, and fifty-fifty teach voice; but that doesn't mean you're always caring for your voice, practicing your own craft, carving out fourth dimension for your regimens. It's the kind of realization that creeps up on you. Yous suddenly feel and hear you can't striking that C6 you used to exist able to sing beautifully and realize that your vocal flexibility has lessened. Every bit age steals in decade by decade, you lot as well realize the danger of the loss of muscular command as the dreaded "warble" sets in from time to fourth dimension. As a year or more slips by without regular, prolonged singing and practice, y'all experience the realization that you had to steal breaths in one case or twice during long phrases you could support previously.
In favor of getting a "practical" higher degree, I forewent studying vocal performance in schoolhouse and studied vocalism privately. People told me, often with tears in their optics, that I sang beautifully and deeply inspired or moved them. I worked hard at it. I practiced. And I enjoyed information technology.
In my life, in that location have been few engagements or practices over time that take fed my soul like singing and performing do. I still bask it. I similar singing. I honey performing. I fifty-fifty similar practicing. But it's not been easy to carve out the fourth dimension to grow or even maintain my voice, to prioritize the practices that keep my vox in shape or grow my capabilities.
Peradventure you're like me and you've struggled from time to time or over a prolonged period of time with 1 or more of these internal conflicts:
- Sometimes feeling guilty for setting aside time for our ain pursuits, especially when family unit or work matters constantly need our attention.
- Or perchance you've set bated the time, simply you aren't sure what to exercise.
- Or maybe y'all've been working difficult, trying to exercise vocalism exercises, but yous don't have the confidence that you're doing them correctly or well.
- Perhaps you're non getting the results you wanted or thought y'all could await.
- Maybe you're practicing, but you lot still experience weakness in your breath back up, your voice is nonetheless warbly or blatant, your range isn't where you recall it should be, or yous keep losing your voice.
If you accept been putting fourth dimension, try, and money, into improving your voice, but haven't seen results, it's frustrating.
You sing in a choir, only have never been asked to sing a solo. Or possibly yous did, merely upon review information technology was marginal at all-time. Y'all listened to a recording and can objectively say it wasn't all that practiced and you'd like it to be ameliorate.
Maybe you feel discounted when you speak, teach, preach, or lecture and you believe your voice may be to blame.
Or maybe you play an instrument really well, just your vocal musical instrument still needs a lot of work. Perchance you'd like to ameliorate your voice so you tin sing your ain songs, possibly so you lot tin even get gigs in restaurants and coffeehouses and such.
If you lot've been working on it and what you've been doing to develop your vocalism hasn't been working , I know information technology'due south frustrating. I've done all of that, besides.
These are all existent-life experiences many of my older students accept experienced and a few I've personally experienced.
Each of those individual scenarios I've described sounds like a uncomplicated trouble. Simply you and I both know – experience has told us – that information technology'south more typical to experience multiple of those scenarios as life proceeds at its breakneck step. Nosotros know that any one of them tin hold yous back, but it's usually more of those challenges that become united states of america off-track from setting aside that time to practise ("as well decorated"), from pursuing either group or solo opportunities to sing ("my voice isn't where I want it to be"), or from even believing information technology's possible to improve ("yes, that ship has sailed").
It may seem like you'd be wasting your time and whatever coin yous might invest in improving your vocalism. Correct?
The Good News: It's not as well tardily!
It'southward never besides tardily.
Ever.
I've been teaching people over 40 to sing and/or to develop their phonation for a very long time – since the mid-nineties. Information technology's my favorite client age group, for all those reasons I listed above, but peradventure motly considering they desire it the nearly. They appreciate it the most. They typically practice the most. Why? Because they realize they have the most to lose if they don't follow through.
More than about people under forty, people over forty, including me , realize life isn't going to go on forever and they desire to pursue wholeheartedly what they've been putting off.
You Can Definitely Meliorate.
No thing the condition of your vox, you tin can always amend. You might currently sing regularly and your voice is decent; yous might currently sing solos with your church choir or other ensemble; y'all might have vocal impairment from health problems, misuse, or yelling a lot; or you might have a raspy vocalization yous believe is unpleasant due to smoking or other abuse of your vocal tract.
But, I tin can promise you this with certainty : you can ever reproceeds ground and you can gain new ground.
In all honesty, you may never be a Luciano Pavarotti or a Celine Dion. Statistics show that despite dreams and even despite drive, most kids who play "elite" soccer or football pre-G through twelfth grades volition never play pro soccer or football. Similarly, most people who sing will never draw live crowds of millions. Simply you don't need to want to draw crowds of millions to justify seriously training your vocalization.
Here are some outlets you might be considering, or might begin considering:
- Offer your voice to your church or community choir and decide to develop your vocalization to solo-potential quality.
- With YouTube and other online platforms, people who desire to share their stuff with the globe can practise then more easily than ever.
- Cities big and modest have community theaters looking for song talent that can smoothen and move the plot frontwards.
- Performing as a singer or singer-songwriter at a local restaurant, pub, or mall.
- Join a band as a background or atomic number 82 singer.
- Begin leading worship in music in your life group, Sunday schoolhouse grade, or service of worship, and decide now to lead vocally with as much excellence as you tin can develop.
Friends, yous practise non demand to be pursuing a career in vocal operation to want to railroad train your phonation!
You don't demand to squelch your dreams or desires to use your vocalism in the world just considering you might non be the star of a show. And who knows that you can't achieve those center-stage dreams, if you prepare your mind to information technology and get to work?! Those aspirations can push button you forward.
No matter your goals, whether humble or thou, you tin can move forward, working on your own instrument to brand it the best it tin be.
And… if you are looking for more…
If you wonder whether your vocalisation could be strong once again, or even believe already that information technology could
If you only had some clear guidance.
If you're looking to regain or strengthen your voice into and throughout your mature years…
Then, I tin can aid you and this letter is for yous.
Notation: This letter is not for you if…
…you're looking for a "magic (singing/speaking) bullet"
…you're non interested in working consistently and regularly on regaining or gaining your voice.
Even starting with a "decent" voice, and even with extremely-effective, cutting edge vocal methods, learning expert song technique and developing the musculus memory to apply it consistently does not happen overnight. If you believe it does and that'south what you're looking for, I am non the right instructor for you lot.
This is non for you if…
…you're not interested in knowing whether you lot've developed unhealthy vocal habits that have ruined your voice.
I am nice, only I volition tell it like information technology is – with love, of course, and with respect and kindness. If you don't want to exist told new things that will aid you, or you don't desire to hear that you've been doing something vocally unhealthy for a long fourth dimension (even though that's the way your choir director in college or another singing instructor in the past taught y'all to do it), OR if you lot don't desire to hear that singing is a whole-body event that relies on your whole-body health, I am not the correct instructor for you lot.
And it'southward definitely not for you lot if…
…you were able to learn that you accept unhealthy vocal habits simply were non interested in changing or stopping those habits, learning new ones, and putting those new habits into regular practice.
The bottom line:
It takes fourth dimension, self-subject, and a decent amount of determination to prioritize getting your vocalisation in shape and and then protecting that time and determination to maintain it.
Information technology takes openness, teachability, and a good rapport between teacher and student for advancement to occur.
Music lessons are non just for children.
Not only are music lessons not merely for children, but, in fact, singing lessons in particular – peculiarly when you consider singing lessons not simply equally singing a lot of songs in an hour just in terms of actually learning practiced technique and doing the work of practicing in between lessons – may well be better suited for youth and adults. Of course, there are always the situations in which a kid pupil is already performing professionally vocally and has lost their vocalization or is in danger of losing it due to never learning good technique. The reasons, I've constitute, that singing works better with youth and adults are because (1) information technology's when we're a flake older and have some life experience that music makes the most sense to us; (2) we're willing to mind, we listen ameliorate on the whole, we are set up to be taught, and we are so willing put in the time to practise the work of practicing the craft; and (three) we realize more acutely and more immediately the impacts of incorrect singing when we feel its effects on our phonation, something that gets more than true with every passing year.
It might besides be that nosotros realize the joys, depths, tangible and intangible benefits of singing and music in our lives: the mode it feeds our souls; how information technology helps us communicate or feel feelings in ways not possible by other means. It can too relate to having a message to give to the world that has come via our many life experiences. Or maybe it's considering we but desire to do the things nosotros've wanted to practice for decades – sing, perform, share our songs – simply have been busy with life-stuff, similar working, birthing children, running businesses, pursuing other dreams, or putting our children and/or grandchildren through lessons. All of that is actually good stuff; but whatever the reasons have been, the finish effect is our voice is out of shape – or never got into shape in the first place.
I'd like to assist yous. (I can assist you.)
I'1000 launching a PROGRAM for "singers of a certain age" to work with me directly to Sing Once more!
While helping folks over forty develop their voices and achieve their vocal dreams over these many years, I've been developing the process that has now become the "Sing Again!" program. I've studied many different vocal methods, taken hundreds of private lessons, sang under at least a dozen amazing choral directors. I've collected what works. And I took the most constructive processes, both ones I adult and processes I've learned from other song pedagogues (I always requite proper credit where credit is due – a masters and doctorate definitely taught me that and practiced ethics insist upon information technology); and I've gathered them into a systematized, codification, and followable program that has helped me and many students.
I know the Sing Over again! program can help y'all, too.
If you've stuck effectually this long, read this letter in its entirety, and my words have resonated with your eye and mind, so, please, contact me using the form below.
